one thing if you decide to help...an ultra-rare but mundane record won't cut it for inclusion on this list just because you happen to own it, or it comes from your hometown or state. This is a list of killers, not fillers.
Also, others have certain information we have missed, for sure. But maybe they won't share it with you, or with us.
Finally, not a lot is known about copies of these 45's which may have found their way to Europe or other faraway lands.
There's almost certainly unknown copies of most of the top rarities, waiting to pop up and surprise us.
Not to mention the ones we may have overlooked, mis-rated or just plain never heard of
PLEASE NOTE RANKINGS ARE TEMPORARY UNTIL THE WHOLE LIST OF 1000 45's IS COMPLETE. #5 TODAY, MAY BE #50 NEXT WEEK. WE WILL LET YOU KNOW WHEN WE CONSIDER THE RANKINGS TO BE ACCURATE. COMMENTS (AND SCANS IF POSSIBLE) WILL BE ADDED TO ALL 1000 RECORDS OVER TIME
records must be 45rpm 7-inch vinyl "PRESSINGS" with printed labels. Acetates, test pressings, cardboard records, blank labels etc. not supported on this list. Other planned lists will cater for these items, which are often one-of-a-kind, and sometimes of dubious origin.
G45 VERSION 2 NOTES : It's now possible to search for any info using the Search and Advanced Search facilities. It's also possible to view the records as a table in any order, ascending or descending. From the table you may view the information and scan for an individual entry. Some entries have been re-ranked, according to information that has flowed in from collectors around the globe. Thanks to everyone who has helped so far. To those who haven't got around to it yet, now's the time! It's now possible for us to make speedy changes to the listings based on the information we receive. The color coded style rating has been improved to cater for a much wider range of garage music styles, see below. All b-sides of 45s will now be listed, regardless of their merit. The 300-1000 entries are temporarily unavailable, awaiting re-ranking and further info. The entries will be reinstated gradually over the next few weeks.
MAIN FACTORS FOR INCLUSION - IN ORDER OF IMPORTANCE
1 - MUSICAL QUALITY - this is a 60's garage list. no overblown wah-wah, hammond, hendrix, cream etc.
Generally "garage rockers" and lame 12-bar frat are out, so is heavy psych. The records are not arranged according to "our favourite garage records". If that were true then The Seeds would have several 45s in the G100. It's "great and rare", must be both, coz we figure you know already which ones you like. However you may not know how incredibly difficult some of these are to find, and you may like to know without dedicating your life to the effort of finding out. All the listed records are great, or they wouldn't be listed at all. If you only like one style then use the color-coding as a guide. There's plenty of great garage records to choose from, several thousand in fact, so "rare but bad" is not an option.
2 - RARITY - a common misconception is that some garage 45's are rare and expensive because thousands of hungry, cashed-up collectors are falling over each other to pay megabucks to snatch them up. This simply isn't true. There are probably less than 100 collectors of 60s garage records worldwide who would pay more than $250 for a single 45. And less than 25 collectors who would ever consider paying over $1000. Way less! This is not Northern Soul. Sometimes the high value of a garage 45 comes down to this : there are 5 collectors who really want it bad, but only 3 copies to go around. In that case, the sky becomes the limit, and silly prices are paid. Often, if another 3 copies are found, they can't be sold for even a small percentage of the previous silly price. In the garage genre, there are at least 250 records which exist in micro-quantities (less than 10 known copies). This makes ranking the rarest ones difficult-to-near-impossible, so don't get too hung up on our rankings, enjoy the list for the info and opinion contained within.
3 - LEGENDARY STATUS - hard to measure, you just have to know. And nobody knows it all.
4 - DURATION OF LEGEND - if a new "monster" was discovered just last year, how can you be sure there aren't another 25 copies where that one came from, soon to surface? Late-comers must be severely de-valued on this list.
5 - COMPILATION APPEARANCE - part of the Legend. Back From The Grave obviously scores big here. Many others as well. But points can be awarded for an inexplicable NON-appearance, as well. Adds to the mystery.
6 - PRICE - almost irrelevant, since bargains and rip-offs occur every day. Some of these have never been sold.
